About this website

What is this website?

This website is devoted to the study of Biblical Judaism.

When did you start this website?

November 2003.

What does the term am ha-aretz (עם הארץ) mean?

The Hebrew term am ha-aretz has several related meanings, the combination of which reflects my relationship to the world in general and to Judaism in particular. These meanings are

  1. A citizen, such as a citizen of the Jewish Nation.
  2. A common person not a member of the ruling class. Everyman, commoner.
  3. A person who rejects the veneration of and the obedience to human religious authorities, such as the Rabbis.

Who are you?

My name is Ami Hertz. I run this website. I am just a regular Jew — both of my parents are Jews, both of each of their parents were Jews, and so on. My biography is not of any particular interest.

Why should I listen to you? What is your authority?

I have no special authority — I am just a regular person. The only reason to value what anyone says is not on the basis of who says it, but on the merits of the content of what is being said.
